Using SWAY to better study Optics

My Physics class and I got through an exciting experience at Hight School Liceo Volta in Milan (Italy)

The whoole classroom started with the usual work and posted papers and compositions about our Optics Laboratory Experiences in a common repository , complete of photos and videos of the experimentations they did.

Then a group of six students decided to examine in dept some more interesting aspects.  So they started analyzing selected optical technological applications and phoenomena.

We followed  Innovative Design Thinking method. The Prezi Map with links to the specific Sways summarize the final result.


Students began with the Analisys Phase: they explored resources and tools using the Brainstorming technique (Innovative Design tool).

After brainstormig, they started the second Phase (Ideation): we used the Ideas Scheet  for rethinking students’ ideas and designing the final product.

During the Developing Phase students made their Sways and worked at home, using materials from our Optics laboratory too.  At the end, we had another team meeting to check the work. We used the Reality Check Tool to verify that all the parts matches together and that the final message is coherent with the expectation.  At last students composed a questionnarie to verify if the work will go along the expectations.

During the Experimental Phase students presented their Work to other classmates, that appreciated it very much. Then they will propose the published Map and the assessment questionnaire to their friends. (feedback integration tool)

Benedetta, Giovanni, Giulia, Laura, Paolo and Eleonora liked very much Sway-mode to report their researches and to show their ideas. They said it’s a very modern tool and funny to use.

I think that Sway is a great tool to develope creativity and inventory in my students!

The School of the Future is here!


You can’t solve the educational problem in the XXI century School if you don’t change your mind!

Teachers need technologies and a Metod to support their changes in daily didactis. So now is born “Innovative Design Thinking for teachers”. This Metod use simple instruments scheduled from team management courses and creative models of learning. 100 italian teachers refined it during 2 years. Now 160 complete projects are published on the site look at them!

I like very much to project my MIEE activities using “Innovative Design Thinking” to meet educational goals with my students.

A few days ago I received the new Windows based Aspire Switch 10 by Acer.

It is a wonderful device: tablet & notebook all in one! You can easely plug and remove the keyboard when required.

Small and light, it is perfect for use in mobility. It fits perfectly in my BYOD classroom.

Thanks to the pluggable keyboard it is possible to write documents and use complex programs so fully enjoying Office 365 incredible power and work everywhere on my OneNote files.

OneDrive cloud is its perfect complement so that my multimedia lessons are always available: synchronization and download are fast and easy. Windows 8.1 allows seamless transition from the desktop computer I use at home to my Aspire tablet and my Lumia phone. Synchronization of different devices is no more a nightmare: it is a resource.

The large interfaces variety (USB, WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, microSD, HDMI …) allows to exploit Windows plug-and-Play principle at its best and the HD display gives me a great experience when viewing videos. New teaching strategies, especially when using an interactive board, largely rely on videos.

Battery duration is not so long, 5 hours only, but rarely it is a problem: a typical school morning last lesser.


Collaborative learning with Onenote

It’s important to learn using Web 2.0 tools, and the teacher had to gradually improve her student’s tech skills. So I started proposing a collaborative online work to my 1B and 1F (14-15 years old) students. We are used to work in a Moodle Classroom.

They have to read a fun little book on Physical problems and then re-write their own version of their selected content using our ONENOTE common block:

onenoteStudents can read in  “consegne” all the information about required steps in collaborative work, projected according rules of the “Innovative Design of Didactis” ( In the Forum the can upload their files and discuss each other. Finally I did an example of  note, processing one of the problem presented in the book: “Quale é la massa di una mole di gatti?”


1. Exploration: each group search resources ( articles, images, videos, references …) about his selected problem and make a list of them using WORD and upload it into their Moodle classroom. I proposed them some interesting scientific tools, like, to do better research.

2. Ideation: groups do selection of  resources using “Ideas scheduling” tool, then decide what they want to write presenting their ideas on Onenote page of the group

3. Development: each group improve his presentation,  using MATH ADD  for mathematical formulas writing.

4. Evaluation: Finally each group presents to class his job, using Interactive Board and explaining the resolution of the problem.

Evaluation takes place using XXI LEARNING RUBRICS.  Class will evaluate ICT  ability in learning and Communication. Teacher will evaluate Collaboration, Knowledge construction, Problem solving, ICT for learning, Communication. Each students evaluate his own too. Finally teacher can evaluate self regulatin of each students.


I’m used to collect  the information in EXCEL sheets so as to be able to elaborate data. But this will be another … post!


School Learning Disruption

enterDisruptive technologies are challenging traditional School Learning.

Boundaries are blurring: formal mix up with informal, real with virtual, the teacher with the learner.

Liquid modernity takes on school a great responsibility.

Education became a lifelong learning journey. Learning experiences need to be designed and carefully projected.

Project proposes a new way to set up learning activities using Open Resources, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and Flipped Classroom modality. The Project intends to rebuilt traditional didactics of Mathematics and Physics in two classrooms (third year of Scientific Lyceum). Learning Units will be restructured according to the Innovative Design of Didactics guidelines.
